08 February 2026

At Matrix Math, we provide an engaging and detailed learning experience for your child. Matrix Math Tuition programme focuses on essential concepts that will further strengthen their mathematical foundation. The lesson synopsis gives parents a clear preview of the topics and problem-solving skills that will be covered in class. At Matrix Math, we ensure that each lesson is designed to build confidence and mastery in math, preparing students for success in both school and beyond.

Primary 1 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will consolidate their understanding of addition and subtraction word problems by learning how to identify what the question is asking and choose the correct strategy to solve it.

  • Revise number bonds and use them to solve problems involving a given sum

  • Learn to find the difference between two groups using subtraction

  • Solve problems involving finding the whole by adding two or more parts

  • Learn to find the bigger group when one group is described as “more than” another

  • Practise finding the number before by working backwards using addition

  • Learn to find a missing part when the whole and one part are given

  • Reinforce the habit of checking answers to ensure accuracy

This lesson will strengthen students’ ability to interpret word problems, apply the correct operation, and reason systematically, helping them build confidence in multi-step problem solving.

Primary 2 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will strengthen their understanding of place value and the four operations through structured practice and guided word problems.

  • Revise place value by reading and writing numbers in words, identifying digits in specific places, and forming numbers using hundreds, tens and ones

  • Practise ordering numbers and understanding the value of digits within a number

  • Reinforce addition and subtraction using the part–whole concept, including finding a missing part

  • Apply multiplication as repeated addition to find the total number of items

  • Apply division to find the number in each group or the number of groups

  • Solve multi-step word problems involving comparison, total, and difference

  • Learn to interpret and solve problems involving ordinal positions and picture patterns

Primary 3 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will deepen their understanding of place value, the four operations, and structured problem-solving through a wide range of guided and application-based questions.

  • Revise place value by reading and writing numbers in figures and words, forming numbers using hundreds, tens and ones, and identifying digit values

  • Practise ordering numbers and understanding number size through comparison

  • Apply multiplication and division, including interpreting quotients and remainders in real-life contexts

  • Learn to form numbers using clues such as number range, digit relationships, and digit sums

  • Solve word problems involving sharing, grouping, and finding how many more items are needed to complete a group

  • Apply the total concept across direct, indirect, and repeated applications

  • Solve comparison problems using structured unit-based thinking to find unknown quantities

Primary 4 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will learn and apply key concepts involving common factors, common multiples, and regrouping, through structured word problems set in real-life contexts.

  • Learn to find the Highest Common Factor (HCF) by listing factors, and apply it to sharing and packing problems without leftovers

  • Learn to find the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) by listing multiples, and apply it to situations involving timing, intervals, and repeated events

  • Solve problems involving area by finding the largest possible square unit and determining the number of tiles needed

  • Apply common multiples to determine how often two or more events occur together within a given time period

  • Use grouping and regrouping to solve problems involving bonuses, free items, and promotional offers

  • Solve multi-step word problems involving quantities, money, and repeated patterns using clear logical reasoning

Primary 5 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will learn and apply advanced remainder and proportion concepts to solve multi-step word problems involving money, quantities, and comparisons.

  • Learn to solve problems using the remainder concept with an unknown remainder, by representing quantities using units and interpreting leftover values correctly

  • Apply the remainder concept with two unknowns, requiring students to reason backwards using unit values and given differences

  • Use LCM-based unit alignment to handle problems where quantities are compared or transferred across different groupings

  • Learn external proportion transfer by starting with equal values and working towards total quantities

  • Apply external proportion transfer by starting from given unit values to find unknown totals

  • Solve multi-step word problems involving savings, spending, bonuses, and grouped quantities with clear logical structure

Primary 6 Lesson 9

In Lesson 9, students will deepen their understanding of ratio and percentage problem solving by tackling complex, multi-step problems involving shapes, quantities, and changing conditions.

  • Apply ratio with a common base to solve problems involving shaded and unshaded areas of composite figures

  • Solve area and length problems by linking ratios across connected parts of figures

  • Use ratio with unchanged total to analyse different scenarios and determine original quantities

  • Solve problems involving changing ratios where all quantities are affected, using systematic unit-and-part reasoning

  • Apply ratio concepts to real-life contexts, including sharing, transfers, and comparisons

  • Strengthen accuracy and reasoning when working with percentages and proportional relationships
