Primary 1 Lesson 31

This lesson revises core skills under Select 5, consolidating addition, subtraction, and number-pattern work through multi-step word problems that ask students to track quantities across several stages.

  • Reinforce comparison thinking, working out a smaller quantity from a “fewer than” relationship
  • Apply part-whole reasoning to combine separate groups into a total
  • Practise multi-step problems where one answer feeds into the next calculation
  • Strengthen backward thinking, finding a remaining amount after some are taken away
  • Consolidate the sum-and-difference method to recover two unknown numbers from their total and difference
  • Reinforce pattern recognition to continue and complete number sequences

Primary 2 Lesson 31

This lesson builds foundation in Fractions 2, where students learn to treat a fraction as a relationship between a part and a whole rather than just a shape divided up.

  • Introduce part-whole thinking to find one part as a fraction of the whole
  • Learn to find the total of several parts as a single fraction of the whole
  • Apply reasoning to identify a part within a larger group of parts
  • Strengthen the ability to find the difference between two parts of the same whole
  • Practise reading word problems and deciding which quantities form the part and which form the whole
  • Reinforce forming fractions from real situations involving sharing, cutting, and grouping

Primary 3 Lesson 31

This lesson builds on Measurement 4, where students learn to solve harder mass, length, and volume problems by comparing two situations and reasoning out an unknown value.

  • Learn the equal elimination method, comparing two totals to cancel identical items and isolate one unknown
  • Apply replacement thinking, swapping one item for its equivalent to simplify a problem
  • Practise combining three equations to work out a single value from overlapping totals
  • Strengthen the habit of tracking what stays the same and what changes between two given facts
  • Apply the before-after approach, using a known difference and a “times as much” relationship to find units after a change
  • Reinforce working systematically through multi-step measurement problems

Primary 4 Lesson 31

This lesson builds on Decimals 4, where students apply decimal computation inside harder word problems involving money, mass, and volume rather than plain calculation.

  • Apply replacement thinking, swapping one item for its equivalent to reduce a problem to a single unknown
  • Practise combining three equations to find one value from three overlapping totals
  • Strengthen the work-forward method, tracking amounts after spending or pouring to reach a “times as much” relationship
  • Learn to set up unit reasoning before working through decimal calculations
  • Reinforce accurate handling of decimals across addition, subtraction, and multiplication within multi-step problems
  • Consolidate the habit of identifying what changes and what stays fixed between two situations

Primary 5 Lesson 31

This lesson builds on Percentage 3, where students move from basic percentages to harder problems involving shaded figures, comparisons between quantities, and real-world pricing with discounts and GST.

  • Learn to express a shaded region as a percentage of the whole, including figures split into unequal parts
  • Apply percentage of whole reasoning to find quantities from a stated percentage
  • Strengthen percentage comparison, linking three quantities through “more than” and “less than” relationships
  • Practise converting percentage relationships into units to solve for a total
  • Apply layered discount and GST calculations, including working backwards from a final price
  • Reinforce careful ordering of steps when several percentage changes apply to one item

Primary 6 Lesson 31

This is a revision lesson. Under PSLE Revision 3, students work through a mixed set of demanding, exam-style problems spanning geometry, ratio, percentage, rate, and pattern reasoning, mirroring the variety of a real PSLE paper.

  • Consolidate area reasoning in complex figures made of squares, triangles, and overlapping shapes
  • Apply ratio and percentage relationships to find totals from a stated difference
  • Strengthen pattern analysis, extending sequences and working backwards from a given figure count
  • Practise guess-and-check and grouping on quantity-and-value problems involving mixed items
  • Reinforce before-after and equal-comparison methods across changing quantities
  • Consolidate rate and time-sharing reasoning in real-world contexts
