Singapore MOE Secondary Math Syllabus

For parents of Secondary 1 to 4 students · Updated October 2026

G3 Math syllabus, year by year

Express, N(A) and N(T) are gone. Secondary students now take each subject at G3, G2 or G1, and G3 is the most demanding level of the MOE Secondary Math syllabus. From 2027, it is examined in the new SEC exam instead of the O-Level.

Below is every G3 topic, the year your child meets it, and how the national exam is set.

Singapore MOE Secondary Math syllabus for G2 and G3

G1, G2, G3: the new Secondary Math curriculum

Under Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB), which reached every secondary school with the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort, students are no longer placed in Express or Normal streams. They take each subject at G3, G2 or G1. Math starts at the level their PSLE result allows, and schools can move a student up or down after Sec 1 or Sec 2 based on school results.

The topics themselves come from MOE’s 2020 G2 and G3 Mathematics syllabuses, in use since the 2020 Sec 1 cohort. So G3 Math today covers the same content Express students learnt for O-Level E Math. What has changed is the name of the level and, from 2027, the name of the exam.

This year’s Sec 4s sit the last O-Level papers. This year’s Sec 3s will be the first cohort to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) in 2027.

MOE Secondary Math syllabus: G3 topics by level

The syllabus has three strands: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics and Probability. Each year builds on the last, so a gap in Sec 1 algebra resurfaces in Sec 3 graphs and again in the Sec 4 exam.

MOE groups Sec 3 and Sec 4 together. Each school decides the order it teaches those topics in.

Secondary 1: from arithmetic to algebra

The biggest shift from PSLE: letters replace the model drawing as the main problem-solving tool.

Number and Algebra

  • Primes, prime factorisation, HCF and LCM
  • Negative numbers, integers, rational and real numbers
  • Rounding to decimal places and significant figures; estimation
  • Ratio, percentage (including reverse percentage), rate and speed
  • Algebraic expressions, formulae and the nth term of a pattern
  • Linear functions y = ax + b, their graphs and gradient
  • Linear equations and simple fractional equations

Geometry and Measurement

  • Angles, parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons
  • Interior and exterior angle sums of polygons
  • Constructions with compasses, ruler and protractor

Statistics and Probability

  • Collecting, classifying and tabulating data
  • Bar graphs, pictograms, line graphs and pie charts
  • Spotting statistical diagrams that mislead

Secondary 2: algebra gets heavier

Quadratics, algebraic fractions and trigonometry arrive. Sec 2 results also decide Sec 3 subject combinations, including whether a student can take A Math.

Number and Algebra

  • Map scales; direct and inverse proportion
  • Expansion and the identities (a + b)², (a − b)² and a² − b²
  • Factorising quadratic expressions ax² + bx + c
  • Algebraic fractions; changing the subject of a formula
  • Quadratic graphs: maximum and minimum points, symmetry
  • Simple linear inequalities
  • Simultaneous linear equations by substitution, elimination and graphs
  • Quadratic equations by factorisation

Geometry and Measurement

  • Congruent and similar figures; enlargement and reduction
  • Pythagoras’ theorem
  • Sine, cosine and tangent in right-angled triangles
  • Volume and surface area of pyramids, cones and spheres

Statistics and Probability

  • Dot diagrams, histograms, stem-and-leaf diagrams
  • Mean, median and mode, including the mean of grouped data
  • Probability of single events

Secondary 3 and 4: the full exam syllabus

The widest range of topics, and the national exam tests all four years together.

Number and Algebra

  • Standard form; indices and the laws of indices
  • Sketching quadratic graphs from their factorised or completed-square form
  • Graphs of power and exponential functions; gradient of a curve
  • Quadratic equations by formula, completing the square and graphs
  • Fractional equations that lead to quadratics
  • Linear inequalities, including simultaneous inequalities
  • Set language, notation and Venn diagrams
  • Matrices

Geometry and Measurement

  • Scale drawings; perpendicular and angle bisectors
  • Tests for congruent and similar triangles; ratio of areas and volumes
  • Symmetry and angle properties of circles
  • Sine rule, cosine rule and ½ab sin C; obtuse angles
  • 2D and 3D problems, angles of elevation and depression, bearings
  • Arc length, sector and segment area; radians
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Vectors in two dimensions

Statistics and Probability

  • Quartiles, percentiles, range and interquartile range
  • Standard deviation for grouped and ungrouped data
  • Cumulative frequency diagrams and box-and-whisker plots
  • Comparing two data sets using mean and standard deviation
  • Combined events with possibility and tree diagrams

Real-world problems run through every year

MOE expects students to handle everyday contexts such as transport schedules, recipes, floor plans, simple and compound interest, tax, instalments, utility bills, money exchange, and distance-time and speed-time graphs. The last question of the G3 Math Paper 2 exam is built around one of these scenarios.

G3 Additional Mathematics (Sec 3 and 4)

A Math is an upper secondary elective for students who are strong in math. It assumes everything in G3 Math and lays the groundwork for A-Level H2 Mathematics. Schools decide who may take it, usually based on Sec 2 Math results.

Algebra

  • Quadratic functions; conditions for real, equal or no roots
  • Quadratic inequalities
  • Surds
  • Polynomials, remainder and factor theorems, partial fractions
  • Binomial expansions
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions

Geometry and Trigonometry

  • The six trigonometric functions, their graphs and identities
  • Trigonometric equations and proofs
  • Coordinate geometry, including circles
  • Turning curved relationships into straight-line graphs
  • Proofs in plane geometry, including the midpoint and alternate segment theorems

Calculus

  • Differentiation: chain, product and quotient rules
  • Tangents, normals, rates of change, maximum and minimum problems
  • Integration and definite integrals; area under a curve
  • Displacement, velocity and acceleration (kinematics)

How the G3 Math exam is set

SEAB has said the SEC papers keep the same format and standard as the O-Level papers they replace. Only the certificate and the subject codes change. Each subject has two papers, both with a calculator allowed.

G3 Mathematics

SEC code K310 (formerly O-Level 4052)

Paper 1 · 2 h 15 min · 90 marks (50%)
About 26 short-answer questions. Answer all.

Paper 2 · 2 h 15 min · 90 marks (50%)
9 to 10 questions of varying length. The last applies math to a real-world scenario.

G3 Additional Mathematics

SEC code K341 (formerly O-Level 4049)

Paper 1 · 2 h 15 min · 90 marks (50%)
12 to 14 questions, up to 10 marks each.

Paper 2 · 2 h 15 min · 90 marks (50%)
9 to 11 questions, up to 12 marks each.

What the examiners are looking for

  1. Use standard techniques. Recall facts and notation, read tables and graphs, carry out routine methods.
  2. Solve problems in context. Pick the right concept for an unfamiliar question, link topics, and interpret the answer.
  3. Reason and communicate. Justify statements, explain answers in context, and write proofs.

Drilling worksheets prepares a student for the first objective. The other two need a student who can choose a method on their own and show why it works.

How Matrix Math® teaches the G3 syllabus

Built on the Matrix Method

Refined since 2008, our lesson sequence lays each foundation before the next topic depends on it, so Sec 1 algebra is solid before Sec 3 graphs need it.

Questions parents ask about the G3 Math curriculum

Is G3 Math the same as O-Level E Math?

In content, yes. G3 Math follows MOE’s 2020 G3 Mathematics syllabus, the same syllabus examined as O-Level E Math (4052). From 2027 it is examined as SEC G3 Mathematics (K310).

What is the difference between G2 and G3 Math?

G3 covers more and goes deeper. Sets and Venn diagrams, matrices, vectors, and ratios of areas and volumes of similar figures are in G3 Sec 3/4 but not in G2 Sec 3/4. G2 papers are also shorter: two 2-hour papers of 70 marks each.

Can my child move from G2 to G3 Math?

Yes. Schools review subject levels at set points, usually after Sec 1 and Sec 2, based on school results in that subject. The criteria differ between schools, so ask your child’s school what they need to achieve.

Will the syllabus change when the SEC starts in 2027?

The content does not. SEAB has said SEC G3 papers keep the same format and standard as O-Level papers. The name of the certificate and the subject codes change.

My child is in an IP school. Does this apply?

IP schools design their own math programmes, so the order and depth vary. Much of the content overlaps with G3 Math, which is why IP students join our G3 classes.

Where can I get the official MOE syllabus?

Download the G2 and G3 Mathematics syllabus (PDF) and the Additional Mathematics syllabus (PDF). Exam syllabuses are published by SEAB.
