Primary 3 math tuition in Singapore
Primary 3 is when problem sums get longer and fractions start to matter. Our structured Primary 3 math programme follows the Singapore MOE syllabus and builds the foundation your child needs for decimals, percentage and ratio in upper primary.
Bar models: one quarter is the same as two eighths
Why parents look for Primary 3 math tuition
In Primary 3, problem sums become more complicated. This is also the year a strong foundation in fractions must be laid, because fractions are what your child will build on to learn decimals, percentage and ratio in upper primary.
That is why a child who coped well in Primary 2 can suddenly find school math hard. Getting fractions right now is far easier than fixing the gaps when decimals, percentage and ratio arrive. Try a Primary 3 question below to see the difference.
You may notice your child
- can do basic sums but struggles with word problems
- is less confident with multiplication and division
- makes repeated mistakes in measurement or money
- finds fractions confusing
- needs help handling multi-step questions
How Matrix Math® helps
- a structured lesson sequence, one concept building on the last
- small class teaching
- guided explanation of each problem-solving method
- focused practice on each concept
- support that matches what is taught in school
Try a Primary 3 math question
Do this one with your child. One total, two fractions with different denominators, and a third group that is “the rest”: the kind of fraction problem sum your child meets in Primary 3.
Try it before you open the working. A common slip is to work out the apples and stop there. The trick is to change quarters into eighths first, so all three groups can be drawn on one bar. The working shows how.
Peter bought 56 fruits. 141/4 of them are apples, 181/8 of them are oranges and the rest are pears. How many pears are there?
Change the quarters into eighths, so all the fruits are counted in the same size units. Then draw one bar for the 56 fruits, cut into 8 equal units (A = apples, O = oranges, P = pears).
Apples = 141/4 = 282/8 (2 units)
Oranges = 181/8 (1 unit)
Pears = 8 − 2 − 1 = 5 units
8 units = 56
1 unit = 56 ÷ 8 = 7
5 units = 5 × 7 = 35
There are 35 pears.
What your child learns in Primary 3 math
Our Primary 3 lesson plan covers the key topics in the Singapore MOE Mathematics syllabus, taught in a set order so your child builds understanding step by step instead of relying on memorisation.
For the full topic-by-topic breakdown, see our Primary 3 math syllabus page.
How we teach Primary 3 math
Primary 3 is the stage where children should strengthen both method and understanding. This is where many children begin to struggle if their lower primary foundation is weak, or if they are not yet confident with multi-step thinking.
A clear teaching sequence matters. When concepts are taught in a structured order, children are better able to handle the more advanced upper primary topics later on.
Our lessons help your child:
- understand what the question is asking
- organise information clearly
- choose the correct operation with confidence
- build accuracy through guided practice
- strengthen problem-solving step by step

Questions parents ask about Primary 3 math tuition
Is Matrix Math® aligned to the Singapore MOE syllabus?+
Yes. Our Primary 3 programme is designed to support the key topics taught in the Singapore MOE Mathematics syllabus.
What topics are covered in Matrix Math® Primary 3?+
Our Primary 3 lesson plan includes whole numbers, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, money, time, length, mass, volume, perimeter, angles, lines, tables, bar graphs, and revision lessons.
Why do some students find Primary 3 Math harder than Primary 2?+
Primary 3 introduces larger numbers, more formal methods, and more multi-step application questions. Students are expected to work with greater accuracy and independence.
Will this help with school exams?+
Yes. Because the programme is aligned to school learning, it helps students strengthen the concepts taught in class and tested in school.
