Do this one with your child. Three kinds of coins, a total number of coins and a total value: the kind of money problem sum your child meets in Primary 4.

Try it before you open the working. A common slip is to find the ten-cent coins and stop there. The trick is to set the one-dollar coins aside first, then suppose all the other coins are ten-cent coins. The working shows how.

John has 12 coins. There are 4 one-dollar coins. The rest are ten-cent coins and twenty-cent coins. The total value of the coins is $5.40. How many twenty-cent coins are there?
