Try a Primary 5 math question

Do this one with your child. Two children, a total, and a comparison between a fraction of each one’s cards: the kind of indirect problem sum your child meets in Primary 5.

Try it before you open the working. A common slip is to take 36 away from the total only once. The trick is to let a quarter of Amber’s cards be 1 unit, then work out what all of Yenni’s cards look like in units. The working shows how.

Yenni and Amber have a total of 204 cards. ½ of Yenni’s cards is 36 more than ¼ of Amber’s cards. How many cards does Amber have?

What your child learns in Primary 5 math

Our Primary 5 lesson plan covers the key topics in the Singapore MOE Mathematics syllabus, taught in a set order so your child builds understanding step by step instead of relying on memorisation.

Whole numbers
Numbers up to 10 million, multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and their multiples, and the order of operations with brackets.
Fractions
Fractions and division, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and multiplying fractions, applied in problem sums.
Decimals
Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100, 1000 and their multiples, and converting measurements in decimal form.
Percentage (new in Primary 5)
Expressing a part as a percentage, finding a percentage of a quantity, and discount, GST and annual interest.
Rate (new in Primary 5)
Rate as an amount per unit, and finding the rate, total amount or number of units in real contexts.
Area of triangles (new in Primary 5)
Base and height, the area of a triangle, and composite figures made up of rectangles, squares and triangles.
Volume of cubes and cuboids (new in Primary 5)
Building solids with unit cubes, the volume of a cube or cuboid, and the volume of liquid in a rectangular tank.
Angles
Angles on a straight line, angles at a point, vertically opposite angles, and finding unknown angles.
Triangles and quadrilaterals (new in Primary 5)
Properties of isosceles, equilateral and right-angled triangles, the angle sum of a triangle, and parallelograms, rhombuses and trapeziums.
Graphs and tables
No new graph topic in Primary 5. Tables, line graphs and pie charts from Primary 4 are used in problem sums.
Problem sums
Multi-step and non-routine problem sums across the Primary 5 topics.
Revision
Select lessons and summary lessons are built in to help your child remember what they have learnt.

Moved to Primary 6: ratio and average used to be taught in Primary 5. Under the 2021 MOE syllabus, both now come in Primary 6.
