Why parents look for Primary 6 math tuition

Examination questions increasingly assess students’ logical reasoning, critical thinking and ability to apply familiar concepts in unfamiliar situations.

Question formats can vary considerably, even when the underlying mathematical concept remains the same. To do well, a student must therefore be flexible in his or her thinking, interpret questions accurately and identify the most appropriate strategy without relying solely on familiar templates.

Try a PSLE math question

Do this one with your child. Four identical trapeziums, a total area and two lengths: a familiar topic set in an unfamiliar way, the kind of question that separates a good PSLE score from a very high one.

Try it before you open the working. The figure is not drawn to scale, so measuring won’t help. A common slip is to forget that CD is longer than 12 cm. The trick is to find BC first, then see what two of the trapeziums make when you put them together. The working shows how.

What your child learns in Primary 6 math

Our Primary 6 lesson plan covers the key topics in the Singapore MOE Mathematics syllabus, taught in a set order so your child builds understanding step by step instead of relying on memorisation.

Fractions
Dividing a fraction by a whole number, and a whole number or fraction by a fraction, without a calculator.
Percentage
Finding the whole given a part and the percentage, and percentage increase and decrease.
Ratio (moved from Primary 5)
Ratios of two or three quantities, equivalent ratios and simplest form, dividing a quantity in a given ratio, and how ratio links to fractions.
Algebra (new in Primary 6)
Using a letter for an unknown number, simplifying and working out simple expressions, and solving simple equations.
Circles (new in Primary 6)
Area and circumference of circles, semicircles and quarter circles, and composite figures made with them.
Volume of cubes and cuboids
Working backwards from the volume to find an edge, a height or the area of a face.
Angles in composite figures
Finding unknown angles in figures made of squares, rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, rhombuses and trapeziums.
Average (moved from Primary 5)
Average as total value ÷ number of data, and how average, total and number of data are linked.
Earlier topics
Whole numbers, decimals, area, nets and pie charts from earlier levels, used again in PSLE-style questions.
Problem sums
Multi-step problem sums, higher-order application questions and PSLE-style non-routine questions.
Revision
Select lessons and summary lessons are built in to help your child remember what they have learnt.

Moved to Primary 6: ratio and average used to be taught in Primary 5. Under the 2021 MOE syllabus, both now come in Primary 6, the PSLE year. Speed is no longer part of the primary syllabus.

The PSLE Math exam has two papers: Paper 1 (no calculator, 1 hour 10 minutes) and Paper 2 (calculator allowed, 1 hour 20 minutes), 100 marks in total.
